Shrine´s last major pilgrimage integrates two cultural initiatives: multimedia projection “Fatima – Time of Light” and two musical plays premières

Bishop of Leiria-Fatima will preside the last major International Anniversary Pilgrimage of October

The Bishop of Leiria-Fatima, Monsignor Antonio Marto, will preside the Centennial´s last major International Anniversary Pilgrimage, which will be held on the 12th and 13th of October under the theme “Mary, Star of Evangelization”.

In addition to the usual celebrative program, the Shrine of Fatima has prepared an additional cultural program to welcome pilgrims, in a particularly festive moment, as it integrates the Closing Session of the Centennial Celebrations.

The multimedia projection, “Fatima-Time of Light”, produced by the Spanish company Acciona Producciones y Design, can be seen in the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima on the nights of 12th, 13th and 14th of October at 10.30 pm after the Candle Procession. All sessions will be free of charge to pilgrims in general.

The front of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima, with 140 meters wide and 58 meters high, will become a 3100 square meters projection screen, converted in the narrative of a story which has the purpose to awake the light of Fatima in the heart of each believer, bringing him closer to the heart of God. This way the Basilica´s façade will gain a special light to remind the evolution of this place in the last one hundred years, reconstructing the most important historical and spiritual marks related to the Virgin Mary appearance in Cova da Iria.

The projection is idealized from the experience of thousands of pilgrims who visit the Shrine every year and it consists in seven scenes: “The reflex of the light of God”; “The heart of Mary, immaculate and triumphant, leads to God”; “The Church sings the message of Fatima”; “The Pilgrims Paths”; “In Fatima we hear a message of peace to the world”; “In Fatima we celebrate the God who is close to the human being”  and “In Fatima we light our heart”.

To the audio-visual projection, 22 projectors will be used – 10 of them with 22.000 lumens each and others of 12.000.000 -, with a total power of 580.000 lumens and a 15.900 pixels resolution. Just the same, the show will have an installed power of 137.200 watts of sound and 16.800 watts of illumination.

On the 13th, and after the liturgical celebrations, the Shrine promotes the Solemn Closing Session of the Celebrations of the Centennial of the Apparitions, around 6.30 pm, in the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima, which all pilgrims can follow through the scattered screens in the Prayers Area.

The session, which will be attended by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the Bishop of the Diocese of Leiria-Fatima, Monsignor Antonio Marto, and numerous guests, integrates a concert held by the Gulbenkian Orchestra and Choir, directed by Joana Carneiro, who presents in its alignment, among others, two pieces ordered to composers James MacMillan and Eurico Carrapatoso: The Sun Danced and Salve Regina, respectively.

The Concert will also be transmitted live from the Prayers Area, so that all pilgrims can enjoy this musical moment, which celebrates the Centennial of the Apparitions of the Virgin to the Three Little Shepherds.

This unique concert also counts with the participation of the soprano Elisabete Matos.

On stage, 72 instruments and 32 singers will be directed by conductor Joana Carneiro. The authors of the two premiered pieces, will also be present.

For logistics issues, the Shrine of Fatima informs that between 9.00 am of October 12th and during the 13th, all day, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima will be closed, making the usual visits to the tombs of the little shepherds unable. On this day the recitation of the Rosary will not be held at 6.30 pm in the Chapel of the Apparitions.

The liturgical program of the International Anniversary Pilgrimage incorporates several moments presided by the Bishop of Leiria-Fatima.

This pilgrimage evokes the sixth apparition of Our Lady to the little shepherds in Cova da Iria.
